The Nifty 250: news of the day in so many words

A LANDMARK ruling to stop any more bars opening on two busy suburban south Liverpool streets is set to be rubber-stamped.

The city’s licensing committee have recommended that no further bar licences be granted on Allerton Road and Lark Lane in Aigburth.

If it is approved at full council in March the cumulative impact policy would be the first such bar ban in the UK.

AN Old Swan man whose skeleton was found in his bed at least two years after he died has been named as Francis Hodgson.

The inquest into the death of the 72-year-old, found by workmen last September, agreed that the reclusive pensioner, who barricaded himself into his home and used the back gate to go out because of vandalism, had died at the Fitzgerald Road address in 2007, or even earlier.

Forensic pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers who examined the body said it was so badly decomposed DNA had been use to discover his identity.

THE £100m scheme to electrify the Liverpool to Manchester rail line, the £431m gateway Second Mersey Crossing and plans to expand John Lennon Airport and the Port of Liverpool's road and rail links, would “grind to a halt” under leaked Conservative plans, it was claimed by Labour.

A leaked document showed The Tories are planning to use executive powers to axe the regional spatial strategy (RSS) – a wide-ranging strategy for housing, transport and business investment over the next decade – without the need to pass legislation.
