The Nifty 250: news of the day in so many words

PETER KILFOYLE IS TO STEP DOWN FROM PARLIAMENT in the forthcoming General Election, saying it is time to be “watching the wheels go round”. The Walton MP brought an end to his 19-year Westminster career by telling party members that everyone reached a point when one must “step aside”.

The Labour MP, who left little clues as to why he left, now plans to fly to Australia to trace his cousin who settled deep in the outback.

IT'S STILL UNCLEAR IF RICKY TOMLINSON WILL STAND AS A CANDIDATE in Wavertree, despite meeting with the Socialist Labour Party last night. Mr Tomlinson said, “I love Liverpool and love the people of Liverpool – that’s why I am so angry at this imposition [of Labour candidate Luciana Berger, the Londoner selected from an all-women shortlist].”

The leader of the SLP, Arthur Scargill, gave little away when asked about the candidacy in Wavertree, merely saying “Our candidates will be announced in due course.”

TORY PLANS TO AXE NORTH WEST DEVELOPMENT AGENCY will prolong the recession and anger local business leaders, its chairman has warned.

Despite a review being ordered a few weeks ago, Kenneth Clarke has confirmed the regional development agencies will be axed if the Conservatives are elected, which has been met with anger and disbelief by the NWDA and other RDAs.

LIVERPOOL’S MUSEUM CONTINUE TO ATTRACT MORE VISITORS. Compared to the last ‘normal’ year in 2007, the eight venues that make up National Museums Liverpool recorded a 14 per cent rise in admissions in 2009, with over 2.2m visitors.
