THE HILLSBOROUGH INQUIRY PANEL will today begin to examine the millions of previously unseen files on the tragedy..

The committee, chaired by Bishop of Liverpool James Jones, was due to meet with the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police Meredydd Hughes in Sheffield.

It will be the first time the panellists, including Liverpool-born newsreader Peter Sissons, will lay eyes on the two million previously unseen documents relating to the 1989 disaster. The inquiry is expected to last up to two years.

THREE ORMSKIRK AND SKELMERSDALE MEN have gone on trial in connection with the theft of a £40m Leonardo da Vinci painting.

The Madonna Of The Yarnwinder was taken from Drumlanrig Castle, in Dumfries and Galloway, in August, 2003.

Edinburgh High Court heard that solicitor Marshall Ronald, 53, of Skelmersdale, Robert Graham, 57, of Ormskirk, and John Doyle, 61, of Ormskirk, hatched a plot to demand £4.25m for its safe return.

The three, along with two other men from Scotland, deny charges of conspiring to extort or attempting to extort the money from the late Duke of Buccleuch, his son and the insurers of the artwork. The case continues.

CAR WORKERS AT VAUXHALL’S ELLESMERE PORT plant will benefit from a £1.7bn funding injection from US parent company General Motors (GM).

It will invest the cash in its European Opel/Vauxhall business – more than trebling its original investment pledge. GM reversed a decision to sell Opel/ Vauxhall to Canadian car parts maker Magna last November,
