The Centre for Cities report Cities Outlook 2010 said “struggling cities” face a long hard slog to pull out of recession without extra government help, describing Liverpool as the worst unemployment blackspot of 64 towns and cities.

But Liverpool Chamber of Commerce chief executive Jack Stopforth hit back, saying, “I wish people would come up and walk around the city and feel it before making these pronouncements.”

UP TO 200 NEW JOBS are being created at Liverpool’s Criminal Records Bureau at Princes Dock.

The recruitment drive is being launched to meet an increased workload caused by the new Vetting and Barring scheme, screening employees working with children and vulnerable adults.
