The Nifty 250: news of the day in so many words

Monday Jan 18: Vision boss retires, vexedness at Cities report, 200 new CRB jobs and more

Published on January 18th 2010.

LIVERPOOL’S “RENAISSANCE” BOSS IS TO RETIRE later this year. The chief executive of regeneration agency Liverpool Vision, Jim Gill, will leave after playing a pivotal role in the regeneration of the city in the last 10 years.

Council leader, Warren Bradley, thanked the 61-year-old for his “outstanding service” and said, “I wish him well in his well-earned retirement”. Mr Gill will stay-on as chief until another candidate succeeds him in March.

BUSINESS CHIEF RETALIATES AT ‘STRUGGLING LIVERPOOL’ REPORT, after it claimed the recession had widened the wealth gap between Britain’s cities.

The Centre for Cities report Cities Outlook 2010 said “struggling cities” face a long hard slog to pull out of recession without extra government help, describing Liverpool as the worst unemployment blackspot of 64 towns and cities.

But Liverpool Chamber of Commerce chief executive Jack Stopforth hit back, saying, “I wish people would come up and walk around the city and feel it before making these pronouncements.”

UP TO 200 NEW JOBS are being created at Liverpool’s Criminal Records Bureau at Princes Dock.

The recruitment drive is being launched to meet an increased workload caused by the new Vetting and Barring scheme, screening employees working with children and vulnerable adults.

After receiving a tip-off, officers allegedly found three men in the middle of a massive drugs cutting and packing operation in the one-bedroom flat on the eighth floor of Gaywood Green Heights.
