NEARLY THREE-QUARTERS OF LIVERPOOL FAMILIES ARE DESTINED TO RENT as they are unable to buy property. According to a study, by the National Housing and Planning Advice Unit advisory body, just 27.4 percent of young Liverpool families were rich enough to climb on the housing ladder in 2008.

The study, Housing Affordability: A Fuller Picture, concluded, “During the past decade, there has been a deterioration in the affordability of home ownership.”

LABOUR HOLDS ON TO FAZAKERLEY in last night’s Liverpol City Council by-election results. Despite a low turn-out of 23.5 percent from an electorate totalling 11,282, Labour’s candidate, Louise Ashton-Armstrong, returned 1,525 votes, delivering a majority of more than 700 on nearest rival, Liberal Democrat candidate, Graham Seddon.

The by-election was called in the wake of the death of incumbent Labour councillor, Jack Spriggs.

BNP SUPPORTERS HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF HURLING ABUSE AT THE FORMER LORD MAYOR. Labour Cllr Steve Rotheram last night hit out at the BNP after the far-right supporters allegedly gathered outside his Aintree home and began verbally abusing the councillor through loudspeaker.

Cllr Rotheram said, “This has really opened my eyes about how bitter and twisted they can be.”

LIVERPOOL COUNCIL’S SOCIAL WORKERS ARE PRAISED BY OFSTED for their high standards of work. Ofsted officials turned up unannounced last month to rate Liverpool Council’s effectiveness in dealing with child neglect cases and overall running of children’s services.

Cllr Keith Turner, executive member for education, said the report’s Ofsted rating of “good” was a true testament to the hard work of all staff.
