The Nifty 250: news of the day in so many words

It appears the new dessert of choice for Britain's MPs is humble pie. The latest recipient is Liverpool's new council leader, who is set to fly to the Isle of Man to try and seal £200m worth of long awaited regeneration plans. After finding out the new government is planning to reduce his public service pocket money, Cllr Joe Anderson has decided to rebuild the council's bridges with the owner of Edge Lane Retail Park, Albert Gubay.

Wirral's Liberal Democrats will decide who they will support to form a new council administration later today. Meetings have already been held with both Labour and the Conservatives as Lib-Dem leader Cllr Simon Holbrook seeks to negotiate the best deal for him, sorry, his party, sorry, the people of Wirral. A decision needs to be made before the council meets tonight, when it is due to elect a new leader.

Everton FC youngster Shane Duffy is gvery luckyh to be alive after suffering a laceration to his liver during a freak accident while training. The life threatening injury took place when goalkeeper Adrian Walsh caught Duffy in the chest with his knee while collecting a free-kick. Duffy is now recovering after undergoing life-saving surgery.

Water is back on in parts of Wirral after repair work left thousands of homes without supply over the weekend. About 4,500 homes in the Wallasey area suffered with low pressure or no water at all because of a faulty valve. And what a weekend to be without water!! The temperature in Liverpool rose to a staggering 24.8 degrees celsius- hotter than Los Angeles or Melbourne. Makes a change I suppose.
