The Nifty 250: news of the day in so many words

THE ROYAL LIVER HAS BEEN forced to repay customers almost £8m after the Financial Services Authority found its subsidiary Park Row guilty of a number of failings. These included a failure to ensure its advisers were giving customers suitable advice “despite the real risk of customer harm”. Former chief executive of Park Row, Peter Sprung, has also been fined £49,000 and banned from holding significant positions in any company for five years.

THE SUCCESS OF THE NOWHERE BOY FILM has created a surge in the number of visitors to the former homes of The Beatles. The National Trust, which manages John Lennon’s home at Mendips and Sir Paul McCartney’s childhood home at 20 Forthlin Road, has reported a 90 per cent increase in people wanting to tour the properties. Both re-open this weekend for the season, and the Trust already has more than 700 pre-bookings, up from 300 at this time last year.

WORKERS WILL BE £815-A-YEAR RICHER if Liverpool and Manchester are connected to major UK cities through a high-speed rail network, a study has revealed. Management consultants KPMG also concluded that 62,000 jobs would be created across the North West by 2040, with the 250mph network doing more than any other project to narrow the North-South divide.

TEENAGE PREGNANCY RATES HAVE dropped in Merseyside, but Liverpool is still above the national average. The city’s 2008 rate stood at 52.8 pregnancies per 1,000 girls, compared with a national average of 40.6, an eight per cent decrease since 1998.
