The Nifty 250: news of the day in so many words

INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT? YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO DIE AT LIVERPOOL ROYAL HOSPITAL'S A&E than anywhere else in England, according to shocking figures.

The survival rate at the casualty unit of the city's main hospital is the lowest in the country, and up to 600 lives a year could be saved if “unacceptable variation” in the treatment of people injured on the road or in falls was tackled, the National Audit Office found.

It condemned the lack of care at night and at weekends in casualty departments.

Hospital bosses said people should not panic as the figures were “incomplete”.

MERSEYSIDE SCHOOLS ARE TO SHARE £5M to set up more after-school clubs and trips. The money is being made available from April in the form of a Training and Development Agency for Schools subsidy aimed at “economically disadvantaged children” whose parents may struggle to meet the cost of extra curricular activities.

Headteachers welcomed the cash, saying it is crucial professional role models were there to broaden pupils’ horizons.

A 20-YEAR-OLD MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED AFTER THE SHOOTING OF A TEENAGER at the weekend.

The suspect from Vauxhall was arrested less than 24-hours after the apparent drive-by shooting on Sunday that left a 19-year-old man wounded on Stanley Road, Kirkdale.

A COLLISION BETWEEN A BUS AND A LORRY LEFT 11 INJURED on Duke Street yesterday morning. The single-decker Stagecoach bus and DAF truck collided at the busy junction with Berry Street, leading it to being closed. North West Service confirmed the people were taken to... Liverpool Royal's A&E.
