Friday July 17: Swine flu halts Cherie, WAG wedding and Chandler's Wharf faces rebuild

Published on July 17th 2009.

Not to be sneezed at
Swine flu has stopped Cherie Booth QC attending a graduation ceremony at Liverpool Hope University.

The wife of former Prime Minister Tony Blair was to receive an honorary degree for her work in human rights and her support of the university.

The Waterloo-born barrister’s spokesman said she “had to cancel because of a suspected case” of the illness, with the award now being postponed to another ceremony in either January or next July.

Rebuild on cards
Part of the apartment block damaged by a crane collapsing on top of it may have to be taken down.

Civil engineers are still assessing the damage from the incident 10 days ago, but say it is likely part of the Chandler's Wharf building in the Baltic Triangle may have to be rebuilt. Many residents are still waiting to collect their personal possessions.

Lothario jailed
A 33-year-old man who had an 18-month affair with a schoolgirl, has been jailed by Liverpool Crown Court. Steven Bainbridge, 33, was sentenced to four years and four months after admitting abusing the 13-year-old girl between June, 2007, and January this year.

The sentencing judge said Bainbridge had “developed some emotional dependence” on the youngster.

Nice day for a WAG wedding
Croxteth Park-born Abbey Clancy and former Liverpool FC striker Peter Crouch have announced their engagement.

The 23-year-old’s spokesman confirmed the engagement of the couple who were on holiday in Sardinia when boyfriend Peter popped the question.
