LIVERPOOL’S JMU ID TO BUILD ‘WORLD CLASS’ FACILITY in the heart of the city. Forming part of its Mount Pleasant Campus, university officials said the £37.6m scheme would not only provide world leading educational facilities, but also a key driver to advance the regeneration of Liverpool. The current dormant Clarence Street tower will be demolished to make way for the new building, which is expected to open in August 2012.
LIVERPOOL COUNCIL HAS BEEN NAMED THE MOST IMPROVED LOCAL AUTHORITY in the country by The Audit Commission. Only last year, the council was criticised as a ‘Lone Star State’, but this year has received three out of four, compared to 2008’s paltry one star. Liverpool has been praised for making the city centre a safe place to visit, leading the Audit Commission to award the city a green flag in that area.
A COMPLAINT AGAINST A CITY MP HAS BEEN THROWN OUT because of lack of evidence. Walton MP Peter Kilfoyle faced a possible investigation after he commissioned research on the alleged failings of the Liverpool “city-region” from a firm run by his daughter. As no further evidence was provided to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, Mr Kilfoyle will not face an investigation.
A MAN HAS BEEN HOSPITALISED AFTER AN EXPLOSION IN A CAFÉ in Bootle on Monday. Firefighters were called to the All Day Brekkie Bar on Stanley Road, where the fire affected two flats. A man in his 40s was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke. An investigation is now under way.
