Thurs, Oct 1: Wrral libraries reprieved, street cleaners dodge gangs, Alder Hey plans and more

Published on October 1st 2009.

WIRRAL COUNCIL HAS MADE A U-TURN by deciding not to close 11 libraries in the area. The decision comes after months of protest by angry residents and former Culture Secretary Andy Burnham ordering a public inquiry. Rejecting the U-turn was because of the government inquiry, Council leader Steve Foulkes said, “We decided to keep the libraries open because we have our residents and employees to look after”.

A STREET cleaning team in Kirkdale were told not to work in the afternoon to avoid being intimidated by gangs.

Cllr Joe Hanson and members of the Kirkdale Neighbourhood Committee advised their environmental squad to do their work “when the gangs are still in bed”.

A £288M ALDER HEY CHILDREN’S HEALTH PARK plan has been submitted to the independent regulator of NHS foundation trusts, Monitor. Liverpool City council has already granted planning permission for the hospital to be built in Springfield Park, where the new buildings would be built once the Edwardian ones have been demolished. If approval is given, work could be completed by 2014 – in time for the hospital’s 100th anniversary.

A LETTINGS MANAGER WHO POCKETED £22,000 and blew it on a lavish lifestyle, has walked free from court. Accommodation boss Samina Simpson pocketed the cash overseas students paid for their university halls of residence. The Liverpool Crown Court judge gave Simpson a 12-month suspended sentence for two years after hearing she had paid back the money and was rebuilding her life.
