Published on December 16th 2009.

ALDER HEY DOCTORS AND NURSES ARE BEING ASKED TO CLEAN WARDS in their free time to help keep hygiene levels up. The measure has been taken by the children’s hospital because of an expected inspection by the Care Quality Commission, which criticised its hygiene standards in April. The Regional representative for The British Medical Association, Dr Jaswinder Bamrah, said, “They are over-using a highly skilled workforce to do what they are not trained to do.”

HUNDREDS ATTENDED THE FUNERAL of the four-year-old boy killed in a dog attack last month. Everton flags, in tribute to the youngster’s favourite football team, and blue and white plumes festooned two white horses that pulled the carriage bearing John Paul Massey’s coffin to St Anne's RC church in Wavertree.. His uncle, Christian Foulkes, suspected of being the owner of the illegal pitbull, was a pallbearer along with the boy’s father and two others.

OYSTER-STYLE BUS AND TRAIN CARDS WILL ARRIVE IN MERSEYSIDE in the next five years, replacing the humble paper ticket. Transport Secretary Lord Adonis announced the microchip tickets will be installed in transport smartcards paid for in advance or on a person’s phone or bank card. The area is one of nine outside London set to introduce the system, with it expected to be up-and-running by 2015.

UNEMPLOYMENT fell for the third consecutive month across Merseyside as the recovery locally from the worst recession in decades begins to take effect.

Official figures released this morning showed there are now 55,953 people claiming jobseeker’s allowance across Merseyside, 448 fewer than last month.
