The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Weds Jan 6: Snow costs county £50m; Field and Kilfoyle call for immigration curb; hard up students and firefighters overtime ban

Published on January 6th 2010.

SNOW CHAOS IS ESTIMATED TO HAVE COST MERSEYSIDE’S ECONOMY £50M after hundreds of schools and businesses were forced to close. Many workers stayed at home to avoid the traffic queues, and those that did make it to work arrived late. Over 48 flights leaving Liverpool John Lennon Airport were cancelled after the runway was forced to close twice.

FIREFIGHTERS WILL BEGIN A SELF-IMPOSED OVERTIME BAN next week in a dispute over job cuts. Planned for next Tuesday, the Fire Brigades Union said the action in Merseyside would expose the “chronic shortage” of firefighters and impact on frontline services.

Fire authority chiefs want to save £5m by cutting up to 104 frontline firefighter posts including 36 posts being moved to non-operational duties. Bosses have said the action will not affect the quality of service provided.

TWO MERSEYSIDE MPS HAVE JOINED FORCES TO CURB IMMIGRATION and stop the population rising to 70m within 20 years. Frank Field, MP for Birkenhead, and Walton’s Peter Kilfoyle, are among 20 MPs and peers calling on both Labour and the Conservatives to include a pledge in their General Election manifestos.

They signed a 'Declaration on Immigration', warning that "failure to take action would be seriously damaging to the future harmony of our society".LIVERPOOL’S STUDENTS HAVE RECEIVED OVER £3M in emergency ‘lifeline’ handouts in over two years.

The £3m sum comes on top of the usual student loans and maintenance grants, with one senior university official warning the figure will rise amid expected funding cuts.
