The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Thurs Nov 19: Council spends £7m on "good value" consultants, Ropewalks up for award, Graham Sankey in court and ambulances crispy clean

Published on November 19th 2009.

LIVERPOOL COUNCIL HAS SPENT £7M OF TAXPAYERS’ money on consultants this year, figures released under the Freedom of Information act show.

Opposition leaders have accused the council of being a “chequebook government” while it is facing cuts, such as shedding 1,000 jobs in the next three years because it faces a multi-million pound deficit. Council bosses said the sum represented “good value for money”.

THE ROPEWALKS AREA IS IN LINE FOR AN URBAN REGENERATION AWARD in the “great neighbourhood” category at the Academy of Urbanism awards.

The Academy is involved in the social, cultural, economic, political and physical development of villages, towns and cities. Much of the Ropewalks street pattern remains unchanged from 200 years ago, with Cllr Peter Millea, executive member for development, saying, “The revitalisation of Ropewalks was one the city’s success stories over the last decade.” The awards ceremony happens in London tomorrow.

A MAN ACCUSED OF HARASSING the city's Labour leader after a football match has appeared in court. Graham Sankey, 24, from Walton, pleaded not guilty, at North Liverpool Community Justice Centre, to harassing Joe Anderson who was driving a car at the time of the alleged incident. He was bailed to return to for trial on January 22.

NORTH WEST AMBULANCE SERVICE has been declared clean after inspections earlier this year revealed its vehicles were dirty. Inspectors declared 41% of vehicles were in a very poor condition, with patients being put at risk of infection. A Care Quality Commission report confirms the NWAS is meeting regulations and the recommendations of the inspection.
