Tuesday Nov 24: Latest Beatles film premiered, suspect bomb in Rice Lane and more

Published on November 24th 2009.

THE STARS OF THE latest in a long line of Beatles films were in Liverpool last night for the premier of Nowhere Boy. Sam Taylor Wood’s film, about the early years of John Lennon’s life, arrived at the Odeon in Liverpool One with the leading man, her fiancé, Aaron Johnson, on the red carpet.

Taylor-Wood said, “The icon and hero of the film is from Liverpool, and everyone was so accommodating - it seemed crazy not to have a big premiere in Liverpool.”

A SUSPECTED WWII BOMB WAS UNEARTHED causing police to shut Rice Lane in Walton. Builders working on a demolished house at the end of nearby Brook Road discovered what appeared to be an explosive at about 12.45pm yesterday. A lone Army disposal expert was called in to inspect a hole dug in the building site, later proving the “bomb” to be a buried gas cylinder.

FURTHER WALK-OUTS BY PRISON STAFF cannot be ruled out after “disappointing” talks with senior Prison Service officials, union bosses have said.

The meeting in London yesterday took place against a background of rising tension at the jail, where an unofficial 24-hour walk-out by hundreds of prison officers at HMP Liverpool took place last week, over complaints of bullying and harassment.

AN ANTI-KNIFE CRIME SCHEME IS TO GO NATIONWIDE after being piloted in Merseyside. More than 40 Merseyside youngsters caught carrying knives have been confronted with the devastating reality of the damage done by blades, after meeting with doctors, nurses and victims. The initiative will now be extended to other knife crime “hotspots”.
