Tuesday 18 August: Iceland dream freezes over for Katona and progress in John Lennon Airport strikes

Published on August 18th 2009.

ICELAND HAVE AXED Kerry Katona from its adverts saying it was “impossible” for her to continue the role. Warrington-born Katona, who was formerly in Atomic Kitten, has been sacked following a Sunday newspaper’s allegations she was taking Class A drugs. An Iceland spokesman added that for "most" of her time working for the chain, she had "been a successful part of our advertising campaigns".

TALKS AIMED AT AVERTING strike action at Liverpool John Lennon Airport are said to be “making progress”. About 150 workers, including baggage handlers employed by ServisAir, have threatened to walk out on Thursday. Proposals were tabled during the negotiations that centre around plans to cut 23 jobs; GMB union official Terry Mellor said: "We do not yet have an agreement, but progress has been made."

A FORMER INSURANCE WORKER’S sculpture has gone on display at Liverpool town hall. Formerly a self-described “man from the Pru”, Tony Evans’ decision to enroll on a watercolour course after he retired has changed his fortunes. The 64-year-old’s latest sculptures centre on his imposing yet intricate gathering of life-sized animals. The Wavertree-born grandfather-of-three said he was “delighted” to be involved in the opening-up of the 18th century town hall.

AN ELDERLY WOMAN has died after being hit by two cars. The 83-year-old was hit by a reversing car outside Home Bargains, in South Road, Waterloo, on Saturday morning. She then fell into the path of an oncoming vehicle and was hit again. The pensioner was taken to Fazakerley hospital, where she died.
