The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Tues August 4: Space drummer Andy Parle dies, council leaflet watch and more

Published on August 4th 2009.

Andy Parle dies
THE former drummer of Liverpool band Space has died after falling on Park Road, in the Dingle. Eyewitnesses described how Andy Parle, 42, as tripping after trying to run across the road at around 11.30pm on Saturday.

He had been inside the Park Road Fish Bar. Some locals ran to his aid and tried to revive him. A taxi full of passengers also stopped, however he died later at the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

David Palmer, “Yorkie”, his former band mate, said: "It's the saddest, most tragic end you could have."

Leaflet scrutiny
ELECTION campaign leaflets in Liverpool are to be monitored to ensure the “accuracy” of campaign material.

The move follows the conviction of senior Liberal Democrat Cllr Steve Hurst after distributing smear leaflets about a rival Labour candidate.

Council leader Warren Bradley said he was not sure the decision was necessary, but would keep an open mind.

No butts
A LORRY driver from Anfield has failed to to win his appeal against a council fine for smoking, despite claiming it was a fake electric cigarette.

Chris Minihan was seen smoking, flicking ash and throwing the butt away from his cab by Halton council enforcement officers. Runcorn Magistrates’ Court upheld the council’s £200 fine and ordered him to pay a £15 victim surcharge to the council and £500 in costs. Mr Minihan plans to appeal against the decision.

Free to go
A MAN who was caught on CCTV delivering “ferocious blows” with a machete has walked free from court because he served the 350-day sentence while on remand. Thomas Arands, 28, pleaded guilty to the charge of affray and was told by the judge at Liverpool Crown Court it was “an appropriate sentence”.
