Wednesday 26 August: Jail for sale, Facebook tormentor and pavement trip compensation

Published on August 26th 2009.

A FORMER JAIL will be sold next month at auction. The Main Bridewell, a Grade II-listed building on Cheapside, off Dale Street, opened in 1866 and closed in 1999. Merseyside Police, who owns the site, is hoping to fetch £500,000 for the 47 cell, four floor prison. The jail was built to house petty criminals, and later to hold people overnight ahead of court appearances.

A HOUSING OFFICER HAS BEEN DISCIPLINED after writing ‘Scouse’ jibes on Facebook about a Liverpool homeowner. Ignatius Morgan wrote comments relating to Steve Porter's 'Scouse' background on the social network site, after a row over problems in his street in Cardiff. The council is now taking “appropriate action” after Mr Porter’s wife spotted the comments and complained.

PAVEMENT TRIP PAYOUTS have cost Liverpool City Council £5.5m in the last five years. More than 90 authorities responded to a Freedom of Information request by the Liberal Democrats, with the average compensation payment being £833,269 over five years. The average payout per claim by the authority over those 12 months was £11,426. Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesman Norman Baker said the “last thing the taxpayer needs is to be paying massive compensation claims for injuries caused by dangerous pavements”.

A TEENAGER WAS RESCUED when a fire engulfed her bedroom. Sarah Rigby, 16, was taken to Royal Liverpool University Hospital after suffering smoke inhalation at her home on Malvern Road, Tuebrook, at 2.30pm on Tuesday. Her brothers have paid tribute to the prompt response of the fire crew.
