The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Tuesday July 28: Observatory plan on rocks, university aid and more

Published on July 28th 2009.

Observatory plan on rocks
THE £11.6m Seaforth Observatory project may not now be realised as the Mersey Basin Campaign that made it happen is wound up next year. The scheme first hit problems with the onset of the credit crunch, but with Sefton Council refusing to take over the project, officials admitted “it might not happen”. The observatory is designed to provide views of Antony Gormley’s Iron Men, the working docks, the Liverpool waterfront and the Mersey estuary across to Wirral and North Wales.

Live grenade
BOMB disposal experts were called to the home of Kenny Dalglish after a live hand grenade was found on the garden wall. The explosive was found at his house in Southport, by police investigating an "ongoing incident", unconnected to the former footballer; the grenade currently “undergoing forensic examination”. Two men, aged in their 20s, were arrested on suspicion of witness intimidation.

University aid
LIVERPOOL academics have pledged to accommodate poorer students weeks before a government review to decide if tuition fees should rise. With some university vice-chancellors vying to charge £9,000-a-year course fees, experts predict some students may never be able to pay back their debts. A University of Liverpool spokesperson said it was doing all it could to accommodate “disadvantaged but able students”, committing £6m annually in bursaries and scholarships.

Four hurt
FOUR people were hurt after a two-vehicle crash in Hunts Cross last night.Police were called to Speke Road, at its junction with Stuart Avenue, at 7.50pm yesterday after the collision. The injuries to the four occupants are not life-threatening.
