AN ARMED RAID AT LIVERPOOL ONE has raised concerns about the centre’s security measures. Four men pulled up outside Goldsmiths in Paradise Street on Saturday morning, before smashing the front door down with a crow bar and axe. The gang targeted expensive watches, but police say they left empty-handed. Liverpool One estate director Chris Bliss said last night, “This was a very serious incident and a full review of all security measures and procedures is under way.”
MERSEYTRAVEL DITCHES PLANS TO SEIZE CONTROL of local bus services because of a likely Tory government and bureaucracy. Merseytravel decided not to make use of the Department for Transport’s legislation which gives local authorities ‘London-style powers’ to set routes and fares. It has said the process could take up to two years and the Conservatives have vowed to deregulate again if they win power next year.
A CENTURY-OLD MURAL IS UNVEILED as the centrepiece of a £1m restoration project at Toxteth library. Known as the Lunette, the 28ft long, 8ft high mural by local artists W Alison Martin and Clinton Balmer is said to be “symbolic of the library’s renaissance as a focal point in the area”.
TWO STAFF AT SHELTERED HOUSING ACCOMMODATION have been suspended over allegations they stole from a partially blind resident. The workers, aged 46 and 51, were arrested on suspicion of burglary after Agnes Palombella's pension went missing in Bob Paisley Court in Anfield. The 51-year-old was released without charge, and the 46-year-old has been bailed pending further inquiries.
