The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Friday Nov 20: Duff computers at council, bookie's call centre closes, Christmas lights and more

Published on November 20th 2009.

LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL NEEDS TO REPLACE THOUSANDS of out-of-date computers, despite spending more than £70m a year on an IT deal with BT at Liverpool Direct.

A report by the council on its IT systems, which has been labelled a “catalogue of failure” by opposition councillors, also states that the council’s ageing computer stock is having a “significant impact on productivity”. Officials are expected to set up an investment fund to meet the huge costs of the replacement programme over a three to five year period.

HUNDREDS OF JOBS ARE TO GO AT A BOOKIE'S CALL CENTRE in Aintree after claims that foreign-based betting companies are undercutting their operation.

Ladbrokes announced it is closing its call centre and losing 263 Liverpool jobs, however bosses have stated they will try to redeploy its workers to avoid mass redundancies. The betting shop’s core telephone business was loss-making at the half-year stage this year, recording a 41% drop in revenues.

THOUSANDS ARE EXPECTED ON ANTI-HOMOPHOBIA MARCH this weekend in Liverpool’s city centre. The peaceful protest was arranged in the wake of the vicious assault on PC James Parkes on October 25. The march on Sunday will start at 1pm on St George’s Plateau and head towards The Strand, before ending at the new Picket, on Jamaica Street.

THE WINTRY PROCESSION LED BY THE SNOW QUEEN marked the start of Liverpool’s A Winters Trail. Council leader Cllr Bradley said, “Liverpool has evoked the spirit of Capital of Culture to celebrate this Christmas. It will be the most magical and creative we’ve ever had.”
