MERSEYSIDE’S RUN-DOWN HOUSES ARE TO GET A SLICE of £311m in regeneration funding. The region is set to receive £47m to help places where house prices have collapsed and where there is widespread abandonment. The Housing Market Renewal programme will also see more than 1,000 jobs and apprenticeships created in the construction industry.

Housing Minister John Healey MP said, “We must continue our drive to bring existing homes and communities back up to scratch”.

LIVERPOOL PUPILS HAD A MIRACULOUS ESCAPE when their school coach crashed in Germany. Thirty-four pupils from West Derby Comprehensive were on their way home from a ski-trip in Austria when their driver had a fatal heart-attack behind the wheel.

A replacement coach has taken the children to Calais, where they will catch a ferry home.

HUNDREDS OF PASSENGERS WERE STRANDED at Liverpool John Lennon Airport last night after more snow fell. It led to two flights being cancelled, and airport staff battling to clear the runway. Airport spokesman Robin Tudor said, “It was quite a downpour”.

Meanwhile there have been several crashes on the motorways out of the city with police urging extreme caution.

A FERRY CAPTAIN HAS BEEN DISCIPLINED after narrowly avoiding a collision with a gas tanker on the River Mersey. The “close quarters” incident in October took place during a sightseeing trip on the Royal Daffodil to view HMS Illustrious.

The 450 passengers appeared to be seconds away from crashing with gas tanker Ramira, with an investigation leading to the captain and his mate being disciplined. However a ferries spokesman said: “At no stage were they inches from disaster.
