The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Friday Dec 18: Christmas markets “hit Cavern Walks trade,” music summit moves to city, women-only shortlist for Wavertree and snow please

Published on December 18th 2009.

SHOPKEEPERS ARE ANGRY ABOUT CHRISTMAS MARKETS, claiming they are blocking their shops which is leading to a loss in trade. Some have seen revenue fall by 25 per cent compared to the run-up to Christmas last year. Another said their Saturday takings were down by around £1,000. Derek Millar, the commercial director of Cavern Walks shopping centre said, “They’ve put this market in place right where we make our money, Christmas is a major time.”

A MUSIC CONFERENCE IS MOVING FROM LONDON to Liverpool. Musexpo Europe will come to the city for May’s Liverpool Sound City festival and conference, but will then stay for at least three years. The event will bring hundreds of delegates, with the LA-based president, Sat Bisla, saying, “It’ll help enhance the global profile of Liverpool as being a true international music destination and a place to do business.”

A WOMEN-ONLY SHORTLIST HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED IN WAVERTREE after fears from the Labour Party that Parliament has become more male-dominated. The all-female list now boosts the chances of former executive of National Union of Students, Luciana Berger, and Wendy Simon, a 48-year-old Liverpool social worker has said she will now contest for the departing Jane Kennedy’s marginal seat.

THE FIRST FLURRIES OF SNOW FELL IN MERSEYSIDE LAST NIGHT, with more snow set to fall over the weekend. Forecasters predict sleet on Saturday, when temperatures struggle to rise above freezing, and a second bout is predicted to hit the North West at the start of next week.
