Tues Dec 1: Dog breeding at home of dead boy was reported to police, hope for a scaled down Kirkby project and more

Published on December 1st 2009.

MERSEYSIDE POLICE WERE WARNED ABOUT DOGS at the home where a four-year-old was mauled to death. John Paul Massey was attacked by an American bulldog at his grandmother’s home in Wavertree just after midnight on Monday and died at the scene. In February, a housing officer telephoned the police concerned about dog breeding at the property. Top-ranking officers admitted not adhering to correct policy by not pursuing the call, and have launched an internal probe by the force’s Professional Standards Unit.

PETER MANDLESON HAS RAISED HOPES for a scaled down version of the Tesco-Everton FC project in Kirkby.

The Business Secretary said he was aware of the disappointment and the long-term impact on employment due to the loss of the £400m private sector regeneration cash. Lord Mandelson cannot overrule the decision taken by Communities Secretary John Denham, but his duty is do his “utmost” to ensure that potential jobs and investments in neglected areas are protected.

A STRONGER ROLE FOR NORTH WEST DEVELOPMENT AGENCY has been pledged by the Labour Party, although a change in government would see it axed.

Lord Mandelson announced that regional development agencies would become a "vital bridge" between businesses and universities, to help economic recovery. The Conservatives say they will scrap the RDAs if they win the general election.

THE PUBLIC ARE BEING WARNED OVER TELEPHONE-BASED ‘REBATE’ SCAM. Homeowners are being asked to send the caller their credit card or bank account details so the money can be refunded for overpaid council tax. Valuation Office Agency officials say they never ask for financial details.
