The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Thursday 13 August: Unhappy holidays, Labour Conference in town in 2011 and shoppers v pickpockets

Published on August 13th 2009.

HOLIDAYMAKERS FACE DISRUPTION as baggage handlers at Liverpool John Lennon Airport voted overwhelmingly to go on strike. About 150 ServisAir staff are to stage the continuous action from 20 August, affecting flights by Ryanair, KLM, Wizzair, Flybe and Thomson. The GMB union said the action is being taken to stop “compulsory redundancies” by Servisair, with 90% voting in favour of stoppages.

LABOUR’S PARTY CONFERENCE will be held in Liverpool for the first time in history in 2011. The city’s economy will benefit from £20m-plus as thousands of delegates and journalists attend the conference at the Echo Arena and BT Convention Centre, in September 2011. North West Minister Phil Woolas said: “The city has now got world-class conference facilities, great hotels and Liverpudlians always make visitors very welcome.”

THE VATICAN HAS ruled the controversial closure of a Wirral church by Catholic authorities as “null and void”. Ss Peter and Paul’s church in New Brighton was shut in 2008 because the Diocese of Shrewsbury had insisted the church was too expensive to operate and moved services to the Anglican All Saints. Now worshippers who protested against the action, have had their appeal upheld by the Vatican and hope the Diocese will re-open the church.

BELLS ON CHAINS are being handed out to shoppers in Liverpool in a bid to deter pickpockets. Attached to bags and purses, they are being used to alert people if a thief is attempting to snatch valuables, with over 800 handed out in the space of two hours.
