The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Tuesday July 14: Lappin death - nine arrested. Flat dwellers allowed home and more

Published on July 14th 2009.

PCs on drug charges
TWO Merseyside police officers have appeared before Liverpool magistrates accused of possession and intent to supply cannabis. Pc Darren Burns and Pc Andrew Bird have both been suspended but are yet to enter a plea; the case has been adjourned until a committal hearing on 27 August. Merseyside Police said they had taken “swift action to maintain and uphold the integrity of the organisation".

Halewood fate in balance
JAGUAR Land Rover has refused to confirm or deny suggestions the Halewood plant will face the axe in a bid to save the firm’s other UK factories. A senior official at Tata Motors – the Indian company that owns JLR - cited the Government’s stalling on a £340m credit guarantee deal as a major issue facing the firm’s future. If Halewood is closed, 2,000 jobs will be lost.

Lappin arrests
NINE young people have been re-arrested over the murder of a teenage Army cadet who was stabbed to death in Liverpool.

Lappin, 16, was fatally wounded after being chased by youths, near the Shrewsbury House Youth Club, in Everton in October 2008. His friend, Callum Naden, 17, was also stabbed but survived. The nine are being held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Back home
A NUMBER of residents have been allowed back home, a week after a crane collapsed on to an apartment block in Liverpool city centre.

More than 100 people had to be moved after the accident at Chandlers Wharf in the Baltic Triangle on 6 July.
