LIVERPOOL HAS BEEN CHOSEN AS A HOST CITY for England’s World Cup 2018 bid. However, Everton FC have been excluded from the bid as Goodison Park does not meet FIFA standards. Bid Deputy Chairman Lord Mawhinney said, “It would have been very hard to envisage an impressive World Cup bid with host cities that did not include iconic Liverpool”. FIFA will make the final decision on which stadiums host the World Cup matches if England’s bid is successful.
THE ADELPHI HOTEL FACES HEALTH AND SAFETY CHARGES after a swimmer drowned in its pool. Madhav Cherukri, 25, was found dead at the bottom of the hotel’s pool in Spindles health club on August 30, 2006. An inquest into his death heard he perished while a lifeguard was in another room. The hotel’s barrister entered a not guilty plea at a preliminary hearing at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday.
CASES OF MUMPS ARE RISING IN MERSEYSIDE, leading to the Health Protection Agency North West to issue a warning about the disease. There have been 1,200 reported cases of mumps in Merseyside and Cheshire so far during 2009, compared with just 586 during the same period last year. Teenagers and students are being targeted after evidence showed the disease is spreading in student populations.
ALTCOURSE PRISON INMATES ARE ALLOWED TO WATCH SATELLITE TV. Being a contractor-run prison, Altcourse Prison, in Fazakerley, is allowing access to a “limited number” of satellite channels in exchange for good behaviour, unlike public prison inmates who are not allowed such privileges.
