The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Monday October 19: Trams miss the bus, Field in expenses row, Tweddle fights on and friendly, friendy and friendlier

Published on October 19th 2009.

BIRKENHEAD MP Frank Field is to challenge an order to pay back £7,000. The veteran Labour member has complained about the "arbitrary decision" by former civil servant Sir Thomas Legg to impose retrospective expenses limits, claiming the “unprecedented” changes to the rules had transformed him from that of "honourable member to rogue". Mr Field, regarded as one of the more blameless MPs where expenses are concerned, is one of a number expected to challenge the repayment requests.

MERSEYTRAM HAS BEEN “VIRTUALLY KILLED OFF” after failing to secure Government funding. Transport Minister Sadiq Khan has written to civic leaders in Merseyside telling them they have missed the funding application dedline for the £400m-plus Line One Liverpool to Kirkby. More than £70m has already been spent on the scheme without a single track having been laid.

THE country's two biggest friendly societies, Liverpool Victoria and Royal Liver, are about to get even friendlier. The two, who were founded in Liverpool within seven years of each other, are in talks that could lead to the creation of a £10bn group with more than 5m customers.

CITY GYMNAST Beth Tweddle says she hopes she will still be around to lead the British medal bid at the London Olympics after getting a taste of what is to come at the Gymnastics World Championships.

The European champion clinched gold in the floor exercise at the O2 Arena, the venue for the London Games, to claim her second world title following her win on the uneven bars in 2006.

At 24, is one of the oldest competitors but she is eager to compete in London after missing out on a medal at the Beijing Games, and said: "I haven't ruled it out.”
