The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Friday July 24: Everyman gets £12.8m, Birkenhead soldier killed and Gerrard's testimonial

Published on July 24th 2009.

New Everyman
THE Arts Council has agreed to put £12.8m towards the Everyman Theatre £28m redevelopment project. The theatre on Liverpool city centre’s Hope Street is expected to become “the new home for the extraordinary range of talent” in the city when it is completed in 2013.

Soldier killed
A BIRKENHEAD man is the latest soldier to be killed in Afghanistan. Guardsman Christopher King, 20, was on patrol in the Nad e Ali district of Helmand province when an improvised explosive device detonated, killing him instantly. His death on Wednesday brings to 188 the total of UK deaths in Afghanistan since 2001 and is the 19th this month. His devastated family said he was a “tremendous son and died serving his country doing a job he loved”.

Shooting probe
A TEENAGER has been arrested after a man of 23 was shot in the arm in Merseyside. Police officers were called to Petherick Road in Croxteth in the early hours of Thursday. The victim’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Two masked men were seen fleeing the scene; shortly afterwards. An 18-year-old man was arrested on nearby Dymoke Road and is now being questioned by detectives.

Testimonial
LIVERPOOL FC legend Kenny Dalglish defended Steven Gerrard’s character in Liverpool Crown Court yesterday. Stating the Reds’ captain is “not the archetypal footballer", Mr Dalglish said in his character reference the player is an “ambassador for the city”. Mr Gerrard denies the charge of affray after an alleged late-night bar brawl last December.

What a complete joke the jury are for finding Gerrard not guilty of assault,he thought he was going to be set upon? why did he approach the man again then ?(with his mates)...how very brave, along with his side kick who threw the elbow !Here's hoping some defender carry's out similar self defence this coming season !

Be fair. This young man is entitled to a social life without every thug in liverpool threatening his family. He showed the same courage and commitment in protecting his young wife that he does every week in playing his heart out for a mediocre, and failing, soccer club.Gerrard is a hero and deserves a medal for his vigilante bravery - not a prison sentence from jealous Everton supporters.

We start one for every other concern when we feel we have been hard done by....What about us all starting a campaign for Justice4MarkMagee ? It was quite evident on CCTV who hit who, let get Gerrard nicked and punished like every other member of the public who have been ! imagine if it was the other way around ? We seem to have drummed up a lot of support for the other chappy who nobody saw batter a bloke in Bulgaria ? oh, i forgot, some bloke said he did it,then he said he didn't....!
