The Nifty 250: News of the day in so many words

Friday Aug 7: Police chief bows out, £17m green light for Edge Lane, TUC boss fined and more

Published on August 7th 2009.

Police chief bows out
THE chief constable of Merseyside Police has announced he is leaving the force. Bernard Hogan-Howe is leaving to take up a role with HM Inspectorate of Constabulary which monitors how forces are performing.

The Merseyside Police Authority said Mr Hogan-Howe’s “total policing” – a tactic focusing on crime hotspots to disrupt criminals at all levels – had “resulted in Merseyside having the biggest drop in crime across the country in the last three years”.

Green light
WORK will begin on the Hall Lane route into Liverpool after £17m of Government funding was approved.

Transport bosses hope to relieve one of the city’s worst traffic bottlenecks when work to improve traffic-flow around Hall Lane, Edge Lane and Mount Vernon Green will starts in October. The news of improvement comes as latest figures reveal attempts to solve Liverpool’s congestion problem have stalled.

TUC boss fined
MERSEYSIDE TUC president Alec McFadden has been fined almost £5,000 for putting railings on the roof of a garage.

Mr McFadden, of Poulton, Wallasey, pleaded guilty to not obtaining planning permission for the garage roof railings and was ordered by the judge to pay £500 and meet the costs of £4,402. Speaking outside the court Mr McFadden said he was “outraged”.

Houses gutted
FIVE fire engines were called to a blaze which engulfed four empty houses in Everton.

The mid-terraced properties in Granton Road were gutted by flames before fire crews from Low Hill, city centre and Kirkdale stations arrived at 5.39am on Thursday. Three jet hoses were used to bring the fire under control.
