Stomach bug, blood pressure and Tevez’ ankle: Thursday 3 January

City news in 250 words

Published on January 3rd 2008.

TWO ARRESTS have been made after a man was found dead by police at a house in Withington last night. Officers were called to St Brendan's Road following reports that a man had been injured. Ambulance crews attended and the man was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary where he was pronounced dead. A 34-year-old man and a 56-year-old man are being questioned.

A STOMACH BUG is causing chaos across a number of Greater Manchester hospital wards. The highly-contagious bug known as the winter vomiting disease, norovirus, is forcing ward closures in Oldham, Bolton, central and south Manchester and Stockport. At the Royal Oldham Hospital alone, one third of wards have been closed with 66 people suffering from vomiting, diarrhoea, raised temperatures, headaches and aching limbs.

MANCHESTER MEN are among the top three UK cities to have the highest blood pressure, according to new statistics. The results of the UK-wide Town Check-Up also revealed that 48% of Mancunians are overweight, with 19% clinically obese, all at an average age of 28. Town Check-Up was created by wellness brands Salter and HoMedics to encourage regular monitoring of various health indicators.

CARLOS TEVEZ is expected to be back at Manchester United sooner than expected following his ankle injury during a tackle against Birmingham on New Years Day. The 23-year-old was carried off the pitch having earlier scored the goal which led United to a 1-0 victory. Luckily for the Argentinean striker, his ankle is just bruised and not broken as initially thought.
