Sausages and Socialism: Tuesday 18 December

POSSIBLY the oddest story of the year has been resolved with nothing happening. The case of a 12 year old from Wythenshawe who threw a sausage at a neighbour is to be dropped. The boy apparently suffers from attention deficit hyperactive disorder. The case has been dropped after four youth court appearances since the incident took place in August.

PARRS WOOD in Didsbury, once Manchester’s top high school, has been given new temporary leadership following a damning report by schools’ inspectorate Ofsted. The school was placed in ‘special measures’ and the head team of David Ashley and Rachel Jones suspended on full pay. The new temporary head teacher is Tarun Kapur from Trafford who was previously in charge of Broadoak High in Partington and Ashton-on-Mersey school in Sale.

PROFESSOR TERRY EAGLETON, one of the most renowned professors in the UK, is to leave his post as Professor of Cultural Theory at the University of Manchester. Having reached the retirement age of 65 his contract will come to an end. Salford-born Eagleton is famous for his leftwing politics, and this year was involved in an academic spat with fellow University of Manchester lecturer, Martin Amis, over competing views on Islamist terror.

THE BIG MAN of Sale Sharks, Sebastien Chabal, has signed a new contract that will keep him at the Stockport- based club until at least 2010. Chabal was a member of the unsuccessful host French team at this year’s Rugby World Cup in autumn, losing to England in the semi-finals.
