Red light robbery and council could consider conductors: Friday 11 January

BUS CONDUCTORS could boost passenger numbers on buses according to a Manchester transport boss. Mike Dunstan, owner of Bluebird independent bus operator, began his career as a conductor and believes most passengers would see them as a welcome return. Councillor Roger Jones, chairman of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority has said if the idea is put to the council, it will be seriously considered.

A WOMAN has been robbed whilst sat in her car at traffic lights. The incident happened on Waterloo Road in Cheetham Hill on Wednesday night. The thief opened the door of her car and stole her handbag. Greater Manchester Police are urging motorists to keep their doors locked and valuables out of sight. They have also suggested that anyone who finds themselves in a similar threatening situation should sound their horn to attract attention.

OXFAM in Didsbury Village has fallen victim to a string of vicious attacks. Workers at the charity shop have been verbally abused and threatened with an iron bar. Shoplifters targeted the shop at the end of last year for valuable items. A minder has now been employed to protect staff as well as CCTV.

MANCHESTER UNITED is top of the UK football financial league. The club has reported a £245m turnover for 2006/07 which puts them ahead of Arsenal. With Old Trafford’s increased capacity, matchday revenue has increased by 30%. The financial results confirm United's leading position in world sport based on the team's on-field success, stadium expansion and increased sponsorship revenue.
