Britain's most senior counter-terrorism officer has resigned after inadvertently revealing details of a highly secret police operation.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said live on the BBC's Today programme that it was "with great sadness" that he had accepted Assistant Commissioner Bob Quick's resignation.
Police yesterday brought forward raids in Kensington and Toxteth and at the JMU library and other North West addresses after Mr Quick revealed secret papers to photographers when arriving at No 10.
Several arrests have been made and the operation was ongoing today.
SHEILDS MARCH
Liverpool FC fans are to march from the city centre to Anfield in Saturday, to help win justice for Michael Shields.
After a rally outside St George’s Hall, the campaigners will walk to the
Liverpool Supporters Club in Lower Breck Road, before the LFC game against Blackburn Rovers, the significance being that Justice Secretary Jack Straw is MP for Blackburn.
In January, Mr Straw asked Merseyside Police to begin an inquiry into the case of Michael, 22, who was jailed in Bulgaria in 2005 for the attempted murder of waiter Martin Georgiev.
Mr Straw is now considering whether to give Mr Shields a Royal pardon.
BEACH HORROR
TWO men from Yorkshire are recovering after being found badly beaten on Waterloo Beach.The two men, from Wakefield and Barnsley were found at 9.30pm on Tuesday at Crosby Marina.
The men, 48 and 52, are currently receiving treatment to their injuries at hospital where their conditions are described as serious but stable.
The marina area of Crosby remains sealed off.
