FLOODING has affected many parts of Greater Manchester so far this week. Notably, the Mark Addy riverside pub had to be closed due to flooding and water spilt over the banks of the River Irwell to swamp the Lowry Hotel’s courtyard. Playing fields at high schools in East Didsbury and Whalley Range were also waterlogged and some train lines between Manchester and Yorkshire were closed.

KELLOGG’S is to campaign against plans to introduce congestion charging in Manchester. The famous company employs 1000 people in Manchester and say it would cause problems for staff as well as making it difficult to transport cereals from the Trafford Park site. The US cereal giant hopes it will be joined by other companies in its campaign against the road pricing proposals.

THE SPICE GIRLS kick off the Manchester leg of their world tour tonight at the MEN arena. The reunited girl-band have booked around 40 rooms at the Lowry Hotel where they will be staying for the next week. It is rumoured that Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria who is promoting her new movie in the UK this week, will be heading to Manchester to catch one of their shows.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON has denied claims that he made a rude gesture at Reading fans in Manchester United’s 2-0 win on Saturday. The United boss could face a Football Association investigation after supporters at the Madejski Stadium logged a complaint. The incident reportedly happened after Cristiano Ronaldo scored the second goal for the Reds.
