Manchester 250: Wednesday 31 October

Blackout, throw-out and Garrido won’t be out

Published on October 31st 2007.

NORTH MANCHESTER is experiencing partial power blackout this morning following an arson attack on an electricity sub-station. Arsonists broke into the building on Stalham Close in Miles Platting at 5.30am. United Utilities are repairing the damage, however numerous traffic lights in the area are still not working and motorists are urged to drive with caution. Power is expected to return to the area later on Wednesday morning.

PAY-AS-YOU-THROW trials in Greater Manchester have been scrapped. The government scheme aims to charge householders by the amount of rubbish thrown away. Manchester council were considering piloting the scheme but are now looking into other ways of decreasing the amount of waste sent to landfills, including compulsory recycling.

MANCHESTER LIBRARY SERVICE has won a bid of over £1m from Big Lottery Fund. The funding will go towards improving the library at the Moss Side Powerhouse. The library has now outgrown its current location due to increasing demand. Councillor Mike Kane said: “This award from the Big Lottery Fund will give a big boost to Moss Side. Young people from the area can contribute to the redesign of the library.”

SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON isn’t ready to give up on his boys just yet. Leaping to the defence of left back Javier Garrido, who was widely criticised for being incompetent, the City boss told mcfc.co.uk: “He’s an extremely good football player. There’s no point singling out individuals, we had a bad performance at Chelsea - we all know it. I will defend him to the end.”
