TONY WILSON is to have his name carved into the wall of Manchester Town Hall. Tony Wilson, who died in August, following a long illness, will have his name inscribed on the wall alongside the Freemen of the City. The motion will say ‘the council wishes to record its deepest regrets on the sudden death of Tony Wilson’. It is the first time such an honour has been given to a deceased Mancunian.
A SECURITY GUARD has been attacked at Asda in Longsight. The 30-year-old man was approached by a group of men outside the store who hit him over the head and then proceeded to try and drive a stolen road-roller into the supermarket wall. The guard collapsed at the scene and is now seriously ill in hospital. The gang left empty handed.
A MAN has been charged with a HIV assault in Levenshulme. Edmore Tabaiwa, 39, was charged after a woman became infected with the virus. He is due to appear at Manchester City Magistrates' Court later. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances.
SIR ALEX FERGUSON has praised both teams folowing the Champions League match yesterday. Manchester United beat AS Roma 1-0 with Wayne Rooney delivering the winning goal. Ferguson said: “There is always a possibility an incident in a match of this kind can set things off particularly after our 7-1 win here last season. But congratulations to both sets of players. The game was played in a good spirit and there was a good atmosphere.”
