Manchester 250: Wednesday 21 November

More trams, less buses and police to out-stage Christmas criminals

Published on November 21st 2007.

STAGECOACH bus drivers are planning to strike. Over 1,200 bus drivers in Manchester are to strike over pay on 27 and 29 November and 1, 3, 5 and 7 December. The drivers have rejected a recent wage deal that their union says would have left them behind the market rate for transport workers in Manchester. However, Stagecoach says its bus drivers are among the best paid in the city.

NEW TRAMS have been proposed for the BBC’s move to the new northern headquarters. Over £19m is being invested in the Eccles line which will include an extension to link to Mediacity:uk. The four new trams are being funded by the North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA), Salford City Council and developers Peel Media. The BBC plans to move to the Salford development in 2011.

GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE will use elevated platforms across Manchester city centre over the Christmas period to help protect shoppers from street crime. Both high visibility and plain clothes officers aim to target pickpockets, muggers, illegal street traders, bogus charity collectors and beggars as part of Operation Santa.

RESPECTS are being paid to rugby league player Mike Gregory, who died on Monday from a form of motor neurone disease. The 43-year-old former Warrington and Great Britain captain was believed to have developed the illness as a result of an insect bite while he was on a tour of Australia. A book of condolences will open at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, Warrington from Wednesday afternoon for supporters to sign.
