Manchester 250: Wednesday 19 September

Terrorism, toxins and transport

Published on September 19th 2007.

FALLOWFIELD resident, Raingzieb Ahmed, 32, has been charged with three offences under the Terrorism Act. Mr Ahmed was arrested at Heathrow Airport by Greater Manchester Police after arriving on a flight from Pakistan. Charges include possession of a rucksack containing traces of explosive and possession of books containing information which would be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

TOXINS in Leftwich, Cheshire are unlikely to have caused the deaths of two babies in 2005 according to scientists. 19-month-old Rebecca Watts and Sharon Pymer, 18 months, were neighbours and died of a form of acute myeloid leukaemia. Dr Alex Stewart, Consultant in Health Protection with HPA North West, said there was no evidence that chemical contaminants found present on the land in the area, had caused the girls' illnesses.

BETTER RAILWAY links between the north of England and London could benefit the economy in the north by £3.5bn, a report has found. Professor David Begg, chairman of The Northern Way's transport compact said: “These wider economic benefits come about through reducing travel times in city-to-city and business-to-business access.”

CHRISTIANO RONALDO has become a victim of his own success according to Sir Alex Ferguson. The United manager has expressed concerns over referee Herbet Fandel who will be in charge at the United game tonight. He said: “At Everton the sending off was ludicrous. Why would he go down when he could score a goal? The ref reacted far too quickly. That is a worrying aspect for us.”

Excellent new feature. Will blog a link to it from http://chrispaul-labouroflove.blogspot.com. By the way on the Art Car dogs I think you'll find they were riding in the Emperor's New Car and fully intend to drive it all the way up to Blackpool on 21st. Sadly they filled in the Emperor's New Form and as the greenest entry by far could only weep at the Emperors New Prize they scored as a result.
