Manchester 250: Wednesday 17 October

TB or not TB and Giggsy extends contract

Published on October 17th 2007.

A PATIENT with the infectious lung disease Tuberculosis (TB) has gone missing from hospital. The man who was being treated at North Manchester General Hospital disappeared from the unit on Tuesday night, then turned up on Wednesday at a hospital in London. Officials are now trying to discover how he managed to leave the hospital unit.

COMPULSORY recycling could soon be enforced in Manchester. The council is looking to introduce bin searches and on-the-spot fines of £100 as part of its bid to make Manchester Britain’s greenest city. The move would make Manchester the first council outside Barnet in London to introduce compulsory recycling. Barnet has seen a 28% recycling increase since the scheme was introduced in 2004.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT has the longest queues in the country. A website which monitors delays has reported that 138 people complained after queuing for an average of 35 minutes at the check-in desk. Ukairportdelays.co.uk found that Coventry has the airport with the least delays. Manchester Airport says it is working on reducing the queues but that the website does not represent the views of all the 22 million people travelling through Manchester Airport every year.

RYAN GIGGS has extended his contract with Manchester United until the end of June 2009. The 33-year-old winger has played 727 matches since signing for the club as a 14-year-old school boy. He said: “I am enjoying football more than ever and I hope to carry on playing football for Manchester United for as long as I can.

I've been banging on about the state of Manchester Airport for the last year or so. What happened? We had a great airport that was a delight to pass through. Now, it must rank as one of the worst. Liverpool John Lennon, whilst architecturally challenged does actually work! The staff are great, the queues, mostly, modest and it's just down the road. We use it whenever we have the option. Come on MAG get it right. And by the way, when you come out of Terminal 1 why do you have to wait in the rain for a taxi?
