THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY is to be redeveloped in a £54m plan to create a Museum Quarter in Manchester. Named the Revolution MOSI, the eco-friendly building would stretch from the River Irwell to the Beetham Tower. Work would begin in 2009 with the new attraction opening up to visitors in 2012.
ALEEF newsagent chain bosses have been jailed for multi-million pound tax fraud. Reports confirm that company directors built up a stash of undeclared cash by using two tills in their shops, but only declaring the contents of one. They also used a charity to launder money and kept a bogus payroll to allow shop managers to falsely claim family tax credits. The men have been ordered to pay back the money, plus £500,000 costs.
A FACEBOOK warning has been issued by police today following a rise in online identity fraud. The Government-backed Get Safe Online campaign arrives in Manchester this week after their survey revealed a third of internet users in the North West are members of a social networking site. It also revealed one in five users don't use privacy settings to block identity fraud.
BUSBY BABE, John Doherty has died at the age of 72. The former Manchester United player made 26 appearances and scored seven goals for the team before retiring at 23 following an injury. United chief executive David Gill told manutd.com: “He was a much-loved and popular figure at Old Trafford, and his quick wit and easy manner will be greatly missed.”
