Manchester 250: Wednesday 1 August

A bar brawl and Manchester joins the congestion race

Published on August 1st 2007.

A 22-YEAR-OLD man has been attacked outside Bar 38. The man, who had been on a night out, suffered two fractured eye sockets, a fractured cheekbone and fractures to his nose and jaw. It is understood by police that a group of men, who had earlier been thrown out, waited for the unnamed man to leave the bar.

A MAN’S BODY was found in a derelict building on St Georges Road in Bolton at 2.45am this morning. Two men and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are due to be questioned by detectives. As Police were in the building, a fire broke out from an adjoining building. Fire crews have attended and the road has now been closed off due to fears the building may collapse.

GREATER MANCHESTER has requested government funds in return for congestion charging. A submission for £3bn has been put forward against the 30 year profits of a congestion charge of up to £5 a day at peak hours. Eight out of the ten local councils voted last week to bid for the Transport Innovation Fund. A decision will be made by the end of the year.

THE DISPUTE over Carlos Tevez is to be settled at High Court on 22 August. The hearing should clarify the validity of the Argentinian striker’s contract with West Ham which is currently holding back the players transfer to United. The Hammers are still hopeful that an out-of-court settlement can be reached before the scheduled hearing.
