Manchester 250: Thursday 30 August

The shake, the strike and the Sri Lankan

Published on August 30th 2007.

AN EARTHQUAKE shook Manchester at 5.45am today. The minor tremor is the sixth of its kind in the city this month. Seismologists at the British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed the quake measured 2.4 on the Richter scale. A spokesman from the BGS said: “Much of the reports were of rumbling and faint shaking. Some people said their beds rattled and moved. One person said a building creaked.”

A STRIKE at Strangeways prison resulted in 15 prison managers guarding over a thousand inmates yesterday. Geoff Burrows, branch secretary of the Prison Officers' Association, described the move as "unprecedented action" and added that the staff blame the National Offender Management Service, not governors, for the walk-out. Over 500 HM Prison Manchester staff took part in the nationwide strike over pay.

THE LATE Tony Wilson’s BBC transfer on New Broadcasting House, Oxford Road, is to be adapted as a tribute. The BBC will replace some of the text with his birth and death dates – this follows the form of the Peter Saville designed invitation to the famous Salfordian’s funeral, last week, at St Mary’s church.

MUTTIAH MURALITHARAN is unlikely to play for Lancashire in the LV Division One match at Canterbury. The Sri Lankan off-spinner who has strained his right bicep is due to fly to Sri Lanka on Saturday to join his international team-mates' preparations for next month's World Twenty20 in South Africa. This means that it’s doubtful he will be taking any risks for Lancashire which could jeopardise his international performance.
