Manchester 250: Thursday 22 November

Trouble at the car wash and Oldham’s sculpture is a wash out

Published on November 22nd 2007.

A FORMER mobile phone salesman has pleaded guilty to distributing terrorism material as part of a Manchester based terrorist network. Abdul Rahman, 25, led the group from headquarters at a house on Heywood Street, Cheetham Hill. Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Porter, head of the Greater Manchester Police Counter Terrorism Unit, said: “This man provided support to people determined to carry out terrorist acts. He was clearly intent on drawing others into his network.”

SUPER QUICK SHINE car wash on Wilmslow Road, Rusholme has been raided for illegal workers. Police and immigration officials arrested three Iraqi men for working illegally after they received a tip-off. The owner of the car wash, Junaid Farid, 32, claims he didn’t realise the men weren’t eligible for work.

OLDHAM’S sculpture The Time Wash is another piece of public art to be hit by problems. Similar to Eastlands B of the Bang, the unveiling of the artwork has been delayed. The 23ft structure is meant to have water shooting out of it but a water connection problem has stopped this from happening. After two years of inactivity, Lib-Dem leader Howard Sykes has said he feels the sculpture is making the town a laughing stock.

STEVE MCCLAREN has been sacked. The decision was made this morning at an emergency board meeting after last night's defeat to Croatia which ruined England's hopes of qualifying for the European Championships. McClaren was given the coach's role in May 2006. Previously he worked as Alex Ferguson's No. 2, at Manchester United.
