ANTI-TERRORISM raids have netted three suspects. The men were arrested at Stockport Road, Longsight. A police spokeswoman said: "Public safety is of paramount importance and it has therefore been necessary to take the action today. There are no links to any recent incidents or investigations. No armed officers were involved."
A BURY bus driver, Paul Davis, 38, has been cleared of causing the deaths of an elderly couple. Jack Steel, 91, and his wife, Elsie, 93, also of Bury, were knocked down in the middle of a bus station crossing on July 10 last year, less than a month before their 70th wedding anniversary. He was however convicted of driving without due care and attention and given a 12-month driving ban and a £500 fine.
ZOOBIA HUSSAIN was ordered to reveal her face at Manchester Magistrates Court yesterday so the judge could watch her expressions. The 32 year-old had previously been the centre of controversy when magistrate Ian Murray had refused to the try the case while she wore her niqab. Murray now faces investigation. Hussain was found guilty of criminal damage.
LANCASHIRE Cricket Club has reached the Twenty20 Cup finals day. Gareth Cross hit 62 runs from 35 balls in a six-run win against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. A jet-lagged Muttiah Muralitharan, who had just arrived back in the country, also helped out. The Sri Lankan spin bowler took 4 wickets for 18 runs. The victory means that Lancashire will return to Edgbaston to play a semi-final on 4 August.
