Manchester 250: Monday 8 October

Lovely, lovely students, Americans and beautiful art

Published on October 8th 2007.

STUDENTS to Manchester bring more than £1bn into the local economy. With more than 84,000 full and part-time students in the central universities of the region the students provide huge support to local businesses as consumers and audience. Many stay on to add to the economy. Despite the myths the students don’t only support the food and beverage industries but also the house rental sector, shops, cinemas, theatres and so forth. They also play a key role in volunteering and charitable activities.

ART TREASURES: 150 years on has finally arrived at Manchester Art Gallery to public acclaim and critical approval. This marks the world’s first international exhibition of art at Old Trafford in 1857. Amongst the works is the Manchester Madonna by Michelangelo – so-named because of the fame it achieved at the Manchester event.

THE SOCIETY of American Travel Writers is in town. More than 500 delegates are taking part in the annual Convention, which is usually held in the USA. Delegates are loving the city. On a Saturday evening pub walk around the traditional Manchester boozers the writers praised, “Manchester’s manageable size, it’s big enough and little enough” and the “warm welcome with everybody smiling when they greet us”. They weren’t too sure about the joys of traditional Manchester ale however.

MANCHESTER has its two top clubs in second and third place in the Premier League after United and City scored, respectively four and three goals. Manchester United also gave a league debut to local-boy Danny Simpson from Salford.
