Manchester 250: Monday 17 December

City news today in 250 words

Published on December 17th 2007.

IN ANOTHER of those stat attacks, Manchester has been declared the cancer capital of the UK. Death rates here are higher than any other city. Manchester had a mortality rate of 167 per 100,000 while the lowest was Chelsea and Westminster with 84. These figures refer to the City of Manchester although all the boroughs in the region had higher than average figures. In other words poorer places fare less well than rich.

THE CHRISTMAS shopping season is bringing in the pounds for retailers. Both Manchester Arndale and the Trafford Centre are reporting increased sales, 5% in one, 13.5% in the other. This despite the log-jammed traffic both are suffering from, particularly the Trafford Centre with queues of up to two hours to reach or leave the mall. The regional figures buck the national trend which shows a decline year on year.

THE LAST TRADITIONAL butcher’s shop in the city centre is closing. J Morgan Butchers on Brazennose Street is to close on Friday after trading for nearly four decades. This means that only the Manchester Arndale market and the fortnightly farmer’s markets will provide fresh meat in the city centre. The loss is blamed on a change in people’s shopping patterns.

MANCHESTER CITY remain amongst the top four after another entertaining win at Eastlands. The 4-2 victory against Bolton means that City have now won nine out of nine games this season at home. Meanwhile Manchester United beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield for their fifth triumph in six visits.
