Manchester 250: Friday 7 December

City news in two hundred and fifty words

Published on December 7th 2007.

AN ABANDONED CAR disrupted traffic this morning after it was left on tram tracks opposite the Bridgewater Hall. Police had to move the silver Audi from the tracks in rush hour whilst tram services were delayed. Police say a man was seen running from the stolen car towards Deansgate at 5.40am and are now appealing for witnesses.

RAIDS have been carried out across South Manchester. Police have targeted a number of ‘career criminals’ in the operation. So far 54 people have been arrested for offences such as robbery, burglary and drugs offences. The latest raids have been on Darley Avenue, Chorlton and Winfield Avenue, Withington.

CONTROVERSIAL German anatomist, Dr Gunther von Hagens, is bringing preserved corpses to Manchester as part of his travelling showcase, Body Worlds. Dr von Hagens has been accused of being tasteless in his previous trips to the UK, however the event at The Manchester Science and Industry Museum in February will feature preserved cadavers and body parts. There will also be lectures and workshops exploring healthy living, anatomy and the ethics of the display.

THE MAYWEATHER-HATTON boxing match is set to be the biggest international fight in years. According to Impulse Tickets the December 8 WBC welterweight title is carrying a level of interest that surpasses any international title bout in recent years. Media interest for the clash has been at fever pitch and extra flights have been organised to cater for the estimated 20,000 Ricky Hatton fans that will cross the Atlantic for the showdown.
