Manchester 250: Friday 16 November

Boy George forge, Mosque fire and Ben on the mend

Manchester 250: Friday 16 November

BOY GEORGE has unknowingly signed a legal document to pay £31,000 debt or face bankruptcy. The former Culture Club singer signed the piece of paper passed to him by a fake fan at Manchester gay club. He reportedly thought it was just an ordinary autograph request. However, it was actually a statutory demand giving him 21 days to pay up.

A MANCHESTER MOSQUE has been badly damaged in a fire. Thirty firefighters were called to the blaze on Monton Street, Moss Side, at around 1am. Most of the roof and several rooms were damaged but there aren’t believed to be any injuries. It is not known how the fire started but Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said that it was not thought to be suspicious.

PRINCESS PARKWAY and Altrincham Road were brought to a stand still this morning after a crash between a HGV and a tractor. The collision caused the roundabout to be closed whilst a crane removed the tractor’s trailer, which was blocking the road. There were no injuries reported.

BEN FOSTER is concentrating on regaining his fitness so he can make a return to United in February. Edwin van der Sar’s understudy is yet to make his competitive debut for United but is looking forward to it. He told manutd.co.uk: “I can't wait until I'm playing again. It's something to look forward to and something to aim for. Whether it's at United in the Reserves or somewhere else on loan, I'm not bothered – I'll take anything.”

And why can we not comment on the Manchester Confidential award? I think the link lower down- the first I've ever seen on a website in the world whereby there's an advertorial for the website's own accountants - doubtlesly for a discount - sits with the smug, back slapping self-congratulation of how you're taking things up? I like Manc Conf: what I dislike is the pompous pretence that you're somehow important or meaningful in any journalistic sense. You will put up anything for money as this link shows, so cut the integrity crap, for all our sakes. I'm a lawyer, so know all about the craven pursuit of cash ;-) - but at least I'm honest about it!

Gilles, contact me on editor@planetconfidential.co.uk or 0161 228 0044 and we'll talk. Briefly, we do stories frequently with real content, with interviews and informed debate, and we do offer an alternate view of the city. If you miss these that's not our problem. And no we don't do stories just for money. As with most media groups, particularly new media, we exist upon money from ads and so on. But the editorial content which bears a writer's name is generated from within and not a penny changes hands. What I don't understand is your confused idea about 'journalistic sense'? What I really don't understand is your total, almost violent anger about us attempting, with stories from the reaction to Bernard Manning's death to this week's miscarriage piece, to say something we feel strongly about. Not many others feel like you as our readership figures show. Like I say, let's have a chat.
