Manchester 250: 30 June 2007

Smoke lifts across Manchester and the Festival proves a hit

Published on June 30th 2007.

THE FIRES are damped down in Manchester and the rest of the UK at 6am on Sunday morning. This is when the smoking ban in public places comes into force. Manchester city council have gathered together 100 enforcement officers who may fine people who flout the rules £50. Venues face up to £2500 fines. Smoking is outlawed in restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, offices and factories. Pubs and other venues with no gardens or outside terraces are worried that when the smoke clears the impact may force them to close

The Farnworth area of Bolton has been targeted in a brace of bizarre attacks. Two smoke bombs have been posted through the letterboxes of houses. Fortunately only one of the bombs detonated and although nobody was injured considerable damage was caused. Police are investigating whether these are dangerous pranks or part of an on-going series of attacks.

LOU REED made a triumphant appearance at the Apollo Theatre as part of the Manchester International Festival on Friday. The Festival which celebrates original, new work began on Thursday 28 July and has already gained critical approval through productions such as Monkey: Journey to the West. The Lou Reed gig had been controversial because it had been performed before but not in the UK and thus failed the test of being a premiere. The Festival continues until 15 July. The main focus this weekend is food with the Manchester Dines event on Saturday and Sunday at the Festival Pavilion at Manchester Central (formerly G-Mex).
